Are You Ready for Your
Fuel Bills to Spike?

It's Time to Speak Out ... the Legislative Session Ends on June 6!

New York’s new energy plan is going to raise your fuel bills! The cost of gasoline could go up 63 cents per gallon, the average natural gas bill could increase by $530 per year, and heating oil could rise by $600, with propane somewhere in the middle.

You need to speak up now, so it doesn’t get worse.

Cap and Invest is really Cap and Tax!

Cap and Tax.pngNew York State is implementing a Cap and Invest plan that is really a NEW TAX on companies who sell energy in the state based on its estimated greenhouse gas impact.

These additional costs will be passed on to every consumer in the state, just like the rest of inflation! It will affect everything from the cost of heating, cooling and transportation to rents, food prices … you name it. Because everything needs some sort of fuel!

But this is just the beginning

If fully implemented, the state's "Climate Action Plan" would require you to ultimately convert your home heating systems, cooking appliances, and cars to electric models. Renters can also expect to see increases as buildings are likewise forced to convert. Albany doesn’t care how expensive it is, how unreliable the electric grid, or how difficult it will be to charge your car if you live in a multifamily building or are on the road. The state has already banned gas and other non-electric appliances in new buildings.

What Albany is also ignoring is the unreasonable pace of its radical replacement of reliable sources of electricity with renewables … at a speed and on a scale never tested before.

Does all this seem smart to you?

Good intentions don't make for good policy. We agree that we must find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But it has to be done without bankrupting the public or endangering our electric grid. Keep in mind, NY produces less than 1% of all greenhouse gas emissions.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is working on the details of this new tax right now. No one has given a real assessment of what this entire climate action plan will actually cost us. Depending on the final tax plan, it could be even worse than the increases quoted above.

That's why it's so critical that you tell Albany they are going too far, too fast! Go to smarternyenergy.org to learn more, and to easily send a letter in less than a minute.

We need more than electrification

We are not climate change deniers. Truth is, the state's approach is destined to fail. Consumers are going to rebel when prices rise and they are forced to spend tens of thousands of dollars to replace their stoves and heating systems. We are as concerned as you about impacting climate change, but we need to move forward more thoughtfully in ways that balance cost, speed, technology and impact. What we need is a smarter, broader path that looks beyond electrifying everything.

Bioheat® fuel (renewable biodiesel blended with ultra-low sulfur heating oil), renewable propane and renewable natural gas, among others, are cleaner fuels that reduce carbon emissions. When combined with increased equipment efficiency, they play a valuable role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions with far less cost and disruption than electrification alone. It may not be perfect, but it can help us make progress without the huge burdens and costs the current plan will heap on NY.
